  3. About Apple Drive Setup Version 1.3

  5. This file includes important information about Apple Drive Setup version 1.3, formatting software for Apple hard disk drives for Macintosh. Because this information is not included in the documentation accompanying the product, you may want to print it. To do so, choose Print from the File menu.

  7. All drive formatting products make fundamental changes to the content of your hard drive.  Apple recommends always maintaining adequate backups of storage media, based on their relative importance for your business or personal use.

  9. System Requirements
  10.  
  11. Drive Setup 1.3 requires System Software 7.1.2 or later.  Apple recommends using Drive Setup 1.3 on the following systems:

  13. - Power Macintosh systems (including PowerPC-based Performa and PowerBook systems).*
  14.   
  15. - Macintosh systems based on the 68040 processor.*
  16.  
  17. Drive Setup 1.3 does not support the Macintosh Processor Upgrade.  If the upgrade is installed in a Macintosh 580- or 630-series system, use the "601 Processor Upgrade" control panel to turn the card off before using Drive Setup.

  19. Drive Setup 1.3 does not support the PowerBook 150.

  21. *Consult your technical information booklet or user's manual if you are unsure whether your Macintosh falls into one of these categories.

  67. Tips and Troubleshooting

  69. • Drive Setup and Energy Saver
  70. Use the Energy Saver control panel to set the hard drive sleep setting to “Never” when you use Drive Setup to perform an extended operation, such as testing the disk or initializing the disk with a low level format or zeroing all the data. This will prevent errors caused by the hard drive spinning down before Drive Setup completes its operation.

  72. • Mounting drive volumes with automount set to off
  73. Drive Setup 1.3 uses a new way of mounting drive volumes to cure problems with virtual memory mounting partitions which were set with automount off. Many 3rd. party products (such as SCSI Probe 4.3 and earlier) have not yet adapted to this new mounting method, and will be unable to manually mount partitions which have their automount setting turned off. Until these products are updated to handle the new mounting method, use Drive Setup 1.3 to manually mount partitions set with automount off.

  75. • Restoring software bundles
  76. If you are restoring the original software bundle from the CD-ROM which shipped with your Macintosh, be sure to quit Drive Setup before restoring the bundle. Disk volume(s) and desktop icons will not show up if Drive Setup is still running while the bundle is being restored.

  78. • Waiting for initialization to complete
  79. Sometimes Drive Setup will indicate that initialization is complete (Initialization is complete message, no moving cursor) but will not actually be finished. Please wait for your new volume(s) to appear in the Finder before continuing.
